Prioritize Advocacy as NAR’s Central Mission

NAR should expand on its existing efforts, articulate its advocacy achievements, and take a leading role in championing the interests of real estate professionals.

In Context

NAR is the largest trade association in the U.S., with approximately 1.5 million members. The association plays a crucial role in shaping the housing industry through its efforts in legislative advocacy, professional standards, and industry-wide education.

NAR has provided resources that empower real estate professionals, and their influence has impacted consumers and the broader housing economy, reflecting Key Industry Achievements.

The Opportunity

Recent lawsuits and settlements have exposed vulnerabilities within NAR, leading many members to question its relevance and purpose. If asked today, many members might struggle to clearly define its role—a concerning reality that requires immediate attention.

Once recognized as “The Voice of Real Estate,” NAR now faces an urgent need to reclaim this role as members grow increasingly vulnerable to legislative threats, legal challenges, and public misconceptions. Now, more than ever, a strong voice is needed. NAR must refocus, reinforce its leadership, and confront critical issues directly to safeguard its members. The organization’s future—and the trust of the entire industry—hinge on these efforts.

NAR needs to strip itself down to about half of what it is today and triple down on advocacy.

Perspective

Many say that NAR has tended to focus on more manageable, winnable battles, rather than confronting the all the complex challenges facing the real estate and housing industry. Whether or not this perception is entirely accurate, one thing is certain: change is essential. NAR must take a proactive approach to addressing every issue that affects real estate professionals. With rising regulatory uncertainty, the organization has a pivotal opportunity to prioritize advocacy and reaffirm its core value to its members.

By doing so, NAR can provide the critical support needed to help its members navigate the complexities of today’s real estate landscape.
